Chiang Mai Gay Pride...Why? Chiang Mai Gay Pride…Why?

Many parts of the world are more familiar with ‘gay pride parades’ than Thailand. This month’s NGO Forum will focus on Chiang Mai’s gay pride parade to come on February 21st in order to further our own understanding of the ‘gay pride parade’ and what it means to Thais.

In most places around the world it is challenging to celebrate gay pride through a parade. Gender-based inequalities, discrimination and stigma related to same-sex behaviour, male-dominated social norms and a host of other factors further fuel the stigma related to gay pride parades.

The Chiang Mai Gay Pride Parade is undoubtedly going to unique from western versions of the same. Many participants in the gay pride parade will wear the blankets of the Chiang Mai Cultural and HIV/AIDS Advocacy centre.

Hear more about the issues, learn from the experience-sharing of representatives from different organizations working in related fields, and participate in the Chiang Mai Gay Parade to express solidarity and support the call for same-sex sexual health rights.

The speakers at this month’s NGO Forum include: Mr Pongtorn Chanlearn, Mr Titiyanan Nakpor from M-Plus and Mr San Suwacharapinan. The moderator of this month’s NGO Forum will be Mr Chanarong Wongvichai from AIDSNet foundation.
