The International HIV/AIDS Alliance
In October 2007, The International HIV/AIDS Alliance (Alliance) and HDN joined together in partnership to strengthen the linkages between the two organisations, drawing on respective comparative advantages and thereby adding value and enhancing potential of HIV and AIDS efforts of both the Alliance and HDN. The objective of the partnership is to strengthen communities and civil society by producing and disseminating information, knowledge and experiences on the day-to-day realities and needs faced by affected people and communities at the local level in national responses to HIV and tuberculosis (TB). The partnership aims to support direct participation, constructive dialogue and civil society engagement in country responses to HIV and TB through HDN’s Partnership Platforms Initiative.
Over the next two years, the Alliance and HDN collaboration will focus on the following areas:
- Joint work to promote and expand the National Partnership Platforms on HIV and TB, enabling those without representation to participate in country responses in a meaningful way;
- Active recruitment of Alliance partners and linking organisations for the Key Correspondents team to provide capacity building in communications;
- Collaboration on national, regional and international conferences to encourage greater reporting and documenting of issues and events; and
- Knowledge management and communication activities, including sharing of experiences and lessons in knowledge management systems.
The mission of the Alliance is to reduce the spread of HIV and meet the challenges of AIDS. The Alliance is committed to prevent HIV infection; improve access to treatment, care and support; and lessen the impact of AIDS. The Alliance is a global partnership of nationally-based organisations working to support community action on AIDS. These national partners help local community groups and other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to take action on AIDS, and are supported by technical expertise, policy work and fundraising carried out at the UK-based international secretariat and across the Alliance. In addition to community and country-based programmes, the Alliance also has extensive regional programmes and works on a range of international activities such as support for South–South cooperation, operations research, training and good practice development, as well policy analysis and advocacy.
