Support to International Alliances
The past decade has witnessed an unprecedented level of international political support for improving the health of the world’s poorest people. The emerging consensus: If we can scale-up effective local interventions, making them available through effective country programmes, we will have in our hands a concrete way of reducing global poverty and ill-health.
The promising commitments of world leaders must however be transformed into reality and action. No one sector can address health priorities alone. The constructive engagement of broader civil society is urgently needed to implement effective national strategies to achieve internationally agreed goals, such as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
One of the biggest current challenges is to create sustainable regional and global alliances that can meet the health needs of vulnerable countries, communities and individuals. Many of the existing structures for international cooperation are weak and sluggish, and are dominated by western approaches. More effective mechanisms for inter-country public-private partnerships on health and development must be urgently found and established so that shared goals can be achieved.
International, professionally-managed, issue-based communication platforms help to support these partnerships and their country-based members through information exchange, synthesis of emerging issues and strengthening of existing networks. Open and effective communication supports country-level implementation of partnership strategies and reduces duplication of efforts. Transparency and timely information provide essential means for delivering feedback to partnerships, and help to clarify the roles and responsibilities of in-country partners.
Drawing on our previous experience in facilitating international dialogue, HDN is directing 20% of its efforts in continuing acting as a technical resource to existing and new inter-country alliances on HIV and/or TB.
SAfAIDS
HDN and SAfAIDS recognize that by working together, drawing on respective comparative advantages, and applying the techniques and approaches that each organization uses, the joint impact of their efforts will be greater, both at the regional and country level where they operate together.
The International HIV/AIDS Alliance
In October 2007, The International HIV/AIDS Alliance (Alliance) and HDN joined together in partnership to strengthen the linkages between the two organisations, drawing on respective comparative advantages and thereby adding value and enhancing potential of HIV and AIDS efforts of both the Alliance and HDN.

Voices that matter. Staying alive with HIV.
Reaching for the ultimate goal of universal access to ARV drugs is clearly vital. But as we strive for that goal we must protect people's right to health and keep them alive in all possible ways.
